OFF SEASON THOUGHTS: LEARN.

APRIL 14TH 2015

Everyday at the Flybook we work with "experts."

Our clients are some of the most talented, skilled, trained and educated tour and outfitting professionals in the world.  Many of you are Authors, Trainers, Directors, CEO's, PhD's, MBA's...and every other abbreviation and acronym you can think of.

Think about the parts of your business from bookkeeping to budgeting, human resources to marketing and search engine optimization to taxes...are you an expert in those?  In most cases the answer is simple. Nope.

We found an interesting article titled "The One Question Successful Business Owners Always Ask Themselves," by Gene Marks. Mr. Marks identifies a trait that we see frequently with many of our customers:

"Every day when you run a business there are things to do, tasks to complete, projects to work on, questions that need to be answered and problems that need to be solved. Many business owners shoulder these burdens. They take it upon themselves to solve every issue. They equate being busy with being successful. They justify their own importance with the perceived requirement that they must do it all.

They don’t trust others to do the work. They are of the belief that no one else can do what they do. And this belief dooms them."

Mr. Marks identifies the singular question that successful business owners ask when faced with something they may not be the expert in..."who will do this for me?"

This isn't to suggest that you should sit back, put your feet up, throw back a couple cold ones (although that might help:) ), and blindly off load all your problems to others.  The suggestion is use what has made you an expert in your field to investigate, develop, and learn...then ask the same question: "Who is going to do this for me?"

Something that we observe on a regular basis is the willingness of experts to continue to develop in the areas they may not be proficient in. They seek out and allow those who ARE experts to support them and their businesses.

The next question is....how do I determine if someone is an expert?  Here is a great article that might help:

How to Be an Expert (and Find One if You’re Not) A little deep thought for ya...for the sci-fi fans...author Brian Herbert, the scribe that brought us Dune once said: "The capacity to learn is a gift; The ability to learn is a skill; The willingness to learn is a choice."
