Partnering with other local businesses is a great way for a tour operator to establish a win:win relationship where both companies benefit from the success of the other.   In my opinion, over complicating the relationships with the "dirty details" is a common mistake when first establishing these relationships.  Commission payouts and the tracking of revenue are important in establishing any B2B arrangement. But, why not set a period of time where data can be collected and the concept has time to be tested?  Then the "dirty details" can be discussed in the context of reality. Get out and meet you partners ... introduce yourself... shake hands, or do this:

Brews and Coupons

A tour provider and a brew pub exchanged stacks of 10% discount coupons.  The brew pub had their servers deliver the coupons with the final check to the table.  The tour company handed out the brew pub coupons at the end of each excursion.

Write reciprocating blog posts or social media blasts with a complimentary business in your area.

Co-sponsor a Cause

A pizza restaurant and a rafting company joined forces to coordinate a river clean up with the local community. Both businesses donated personnel, resources, food and equipment.  The focus of the event was genuinely centered on the river clean up; the bi-product of the event was very positive publicity within the region.

 


 

Think about your area and who else is marketing to the same clientele.  Who could become an ally for cross-selling? Concierges, lodges, and hotels are the obvious step. But don't forget about restaurants, local B&Bs, guides of other services, event planners, etc.  At the very least exchange brochures and/or business cards. Don't forget to give thanks quickly for any lead or referral, and don't hesitate to give a free service to your partner; oftentimes it is during these moments where great plans are hatched:) Keep it simple, keep it cheap and have fun.
